Your Homeschool Checklist

Think of homeschooling as beginning an exciting trip to a new and adventurous place. At first your every thought is about the amazing experience you’re about to have. Then, all of a sudden, you’re a few days away from taking your trip and you feel the butterflies in your stomach. Am I really ready for this?

Making a checklist is a tried-and-true step toward seeing your journey starts off on the right foot. Here are a few steps to help with your travel jitters:

- Find your state’s homeschooling requirements. A great resource for this is the Homeschool Legal Defense Association.

- Make a list of why you are choosing to homeschool. As you make the journey, refer back to this list often as it will help you focus and encourage you on difficult days.

- Make an honest assessment of your child’s spiritual, emotional, and academic readiness to determine the best path forward to ensure their success.

- Seek out other homeschooling families. You’ll discover they are very willing to answer questions and help you with tips and tidbits from their journey. A good place to start networking is your local church and library. You can also use social media and message groups.

- Connect with your state organization

- Decide on a curriculum. Consider your child’s learning style and make decisions based on a structure which best nurtures your child educationally and spiritually.

- Take a deep breath and say, “We’re really doing this!” Then embark on your journey.

Once you’ve made the decision to homeschool and have settled on your curriculum:

- Compile your classroom supplies. You will find that a simple selection of basic supplies (pens, pencils, paper, markers, crayons, etc.) will be sufficient.

- Establish your daily schedule. While homeschooling allows a large degree of flexibility, consistency in maintaining dedicated classroom time will be your friend. Our Teacher’s Manuals are very helpful in establishing and maintaining your schedule.

- Enjoy the journey. You are blessing your children with your most valuable asset: your time.
