Why I Homeschool

Every word of God proves true; He is a shield to those who take refuge in him. — Proverbs 30:5 (ESV)

There are many reasons that I homeschool my kids. At the top of the list is biblical instruction. There are so many worldly forces that prey upon the minds of children that this one area is not one that can be overlooked.

I was in the public school system until my 8th grade year when my parents pulled me out. I can tell you from having been rescued out of that government indoctrination center, my view of the world was far from how it should be. Even though I was raised in church, and part of every kids' program therein, my worldview was overpowered by the hellscape I had to endure every Monday thru Friday. If it were not for loving parents who pulled me out of that environment and the grace of God, I would not be where I am today.

There is a major developmental point for children where they are little sponges for learning. I have heard people say that by the time a child reaches about age 7 the track of their worldview is firmly set. That is not to say that it cannot be corrected or that it cannot change. It means after that point in time it is much more difficult to correct than if they had been set on a different path.

When I was in the public school system, I was taught that morality was fluid. I was taught that acceptance by peers was of higher value than a lifestyle acceptable to God. I was taught the value of a man is based upon how many people he can be better than. I could go on and on about experiences beyond that, but I will possibly save that for a later time. But I can tell you there are things I endured under that system that took years to correct.

It wasn't until I had begun homeschooling that the seeds of the Gospel began to penetrate into my soul. The oppression that I was under was no longer there to torment me five days a week. The destructive environment was no longer there, and I was able to begin the healing process that comes when God rescues somebody from oppression. It was being placed under a Godly influence in homeschooling that began my course correction. I can tell you without a doubt the pain I had been delivered from was something I never wanted my kids to experience.

It was when I was in high school that I told myself I never wanted my kids to have to be in the environment I had. As a result, I see my kids not having to struggle with the same issues that I had to. My kids are normal and happy.

Solomon said in Proverbs that "God is a shield". That is why it is so important to teach your children from a biblical perspective. When we teach our kids from the basis God designed, we provide the shield that is desperately needed for their lives. That biblical foundation sets them on a proper course.

It is never too late to begin that journey and it is worth every bit that it took to be on it. From day one of being placed in homeschool, I got to experience the blessing of having the shield of God in my life. I am certain you can enjoy that blessing too.

But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. — 1 Corinthians 15:10a (ESV)
