Lesson plans are written to the student for parent-guided independent work. There are 36 weeks of lessons, five days a week, with a somewhat lighter schedule on most Fridays. On Fridays, the student and parent have a conference to discuss the week's topics and review completed work. Our high school curriculum covers all needed language arts; no other supplementation is needed. However, if a student has not had formal grammar instruction, he should complete Applications of Grammar. If a student is weak in composition skills, he should complete Writing Strands Level 4.

To complete your curriculum, just add Science, Math, and Electives.

U.S. History to 1877 Teacher's ManualU.S. History to 1877 with Government, American Literature, and Biblical Worldview is a one-year curriculum for high school that integrates U.S. history, government, English, and Bible (3 full-year credits). You will need to add science, math, and electives such as foreign language.

Lesson plans are written to the student for parent-guided independent work. There are 36 weeks of lessons, five days a week, with a somewhat lighter schedule on most Fridays. On Fridays, the student and parent have a conference to discuss the week's topics and review completed work. Also on Fridays for the first half of the year, parents have the option to prepare and teach 45-minute lessons for Thinking Like a Christian.

We suggest two options for using Thinking Like a Christian:

Option 1 requires the active involvement of the parent/teacher to read the lesson ahead of time, prepare, and teach a weekly 45-minute teaching session and short review. (Detailed lesson plans are provided.) This option provides for valuable interaction about Biblical worldview between student and parent/teacher.

Option 2 is available for circumstances in which families cannot follow option 1. The student will not have the benefit of additional enrichment activities, guided discussions, and structured input from the parent/teacher; this is a self-teaching option. Option 2 still provides exposure to an excellent Biblical worldview course.

Biblical Worldview

  • Develop a consistent Biblical worldview in the areas of theology, philosophy, biology, psychology, ethics, sociology, law, politics, economics, and history. Study Thinking Like a Christian by David Noebel and Chuck Edwards of Summit Ministries as well as Assumptions That Affect Our Lives by Dr. Christian Overman. Includes a daily journal and projects.
  • Grow in applying God's truths to daily life through the encouragement and challenges in Growing Up Christian and Christian Character.
  • Participate in service projects chosen and/or developed by the student and the parent/teacher.

U.S. History to 1877 and Government

  • Study early explorers to the Civil War and Reconstruction. Includes extension activities with maps, comprehension questions and chapter tests. One semester credit. (U.S. history after 1877 is studied the following year.)
  • Study U.S. government with comprehension questions, chapter tests, and related projects, using Under God and Never Before in History. One semester credit.
  • Optional: Attempt CLEP college credit for U.S. History 1 at the end of the year. Prepare with the study guide CLEP History of the United States I, available separately.

American Literature

  • Read significant historical documents such as the Mayflower Compact and early political speeches.
  • Read literature written during the historical periods being studied. The primary focus is analyzing the author's worldview in light of a Biblical worldview. All of the literature is fully scheduled in the lesson plans so that assigned readings coordinate with history events being studied. Includes questions for some of the literature as well as short answer/essay assignments. There are no formal tests for literature. For several weeks students select from a recommended list their choice of reading, which may be found at the library.
  • Review grammar (punctuation, capitalization, parts of speech, etc.) 5-10 minutes each day to improve the accuracy of the student's writing and assist in ACT/SAT review.
  • Optional: Attempt CLEP college credit for English at the end of the year. Prepare with the study guide CLEP Freshman College Composition (available separately).
"I have really enjoyed how the lessons have each day planned out for me. The choice of books that are assigned are also very good books that I almost always enjoy. This curriculum has been a great Christ-based curriculum that has greatly impacted my spiritual life."

-- Josh, age 17

"I have learned so much about our country and it is really neat to be able to apply what I have learned to everyday situations I see or hear about."

-- Sarah, age 17

When is American Government studied in the Family Cycle?
During Year 4, Exploration to 1850, the first part of American history is covered and students are introduced to: the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the three branches of government. You read about the process and people involved in forming our government in George Washington's World. This gives a basic overview of how our country's government was formed. A more in-depth study of U.S. government is covered in year 3 of our high school program.
What do you recommend for drivers education?
