A year-long learning adventure for young children. This complete kindergarten curriculum contains all necessary subjects and is ideal for homeschool or classroom. The first two weeks focus on the creation story from Genesis, followed by 26 hands-on, easy to teach thematic units that focus on the wonders in God's creation. The sun, moon, rocks, vegetables, elephants, butterflies, and dinosaurs are just a few of the exciting topics you will explore.
Reading is taught with a highly successful multi-sensory phonics approach. Hands-on and workbook activities are combined to teach letter names, 26 letter sounds (consonants and short vowels), sound blending, and correct handwriting. Students learn to read short vowel words. By mid-year they are reading very simple stories. The reading lessons may be used successfully with 5-year-old and mature 4-year-old children or with older children who are just beginning to learn letter sounds. Each unit also recommends a children's literature book (and alternate choices from a newly updated list of over 400 books) related to the theme that becomes the focus of related activities. Borrow these books from the library, substitute picture books of your choice, or purchase the Kindergarten Literature Collection.
Math is taught using an informal, integrated approach. Many skills are woven into the lessons, as students cut an apple in half, measure and compare the lengths of dinosaurs and whales, and order leaves by size. All typical kindergarten goals are taught, including counting objects, writing numerals, preparing and understanding charts and graphs, comparing, classifying, sequencing, and understanding ordinal numbers, fractions (whole/half), clocks, money, and an introduction to addition and subtraction.
Science, Bible, Creative Thinking, Character Development, Children's Literature, and Art are also integrated into the 26 easy-to-teach thematic units. Each six-day unit focuses on one alphabet letter and one corresponding science topic. For example, in Lesson 1, "S-s-sun," students learn letter "s" and number 1, study about the sun, construct and use a sundial, observe and chart grapes as they become raisins, paint a sun, listen to a funny book about shadows, and learn that, like the sun, Jesus is the light of the world.
A special feature is the focus on character development integrated into each lesson. The turtle lesson teaches, "I don't quit -- I persevere!" The horse lesson teaches, "I obey right away." The zebra lesson teaches, "I can't hide anything from God."
Daily Lessons are 60-90 minutes long. The clear step-by-step daily instructions are of great help to new homeschool teachers.
Daily work is presented in three parts:
- 100 Chart and monthly calendar
- Reading lesson
- The day's special hands-on activity as described in the Teacher's Manual. These focus on science, math, Bible, art, children's literature, and creative thinking. Children ages 3 - 8 may learn together using these activities.

Lesson 11
Insect
I am a wise child, so I work hard. |
Day 1
Activity
Present information about insects, using the "Insect" article from an encyclopedia and/or other children's books about insects.
Say, "Some insects work very hard. They are not lazy. Tomorrow we will learn about ants. They really work hard. God wants us to work hard, too, and not be lazy. What are some things you can do to help at home and at school?"
Show the "insect" flashcard and help the student memorize the words to remember: "I am a wise child, so I work hard."

Day 2
Activity
Look at the "Ant" article in World Book Encyclopedia and observe the different kinds of ants. Talk about the illustrations of ant nests, life cycles, etc. Also very informative is Ant Cities by Arthur Dorros (Scholastic, 1989). Be sure to emphasize what hard workers the ants are.
Set up an ant farm and observe the amazing way that ants build tunnels. (See the appendix for information to order an ant farm.) The ant farm is designed with a very thin frame which makes it ideal for observing the many tunnels the ants make. An alternative would be to try and make your own ant farm in a glass jar, but the tunnels will be more difficult to observe. To do this, place some soil in the bottom of the jar. Then find an anthill, scoop up the ants and surrounding dirt, and place them in your jar. Put the jar in a pan of water so the ants don't escape. Cover the jar with black paper. Peek at the ants now and then. Feed them once or twice a week with cookie crumbs, bread crumbs soaked in syrup, bits of meat, or dead insects. For water, put a piece of a wet sponge in the jar.
Read the following verses to the student from your Bible. Discuss the meaning and some practical applications.
Proverbs 6:6-9 "Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest. How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep?"
Proverbs 10:4-5 "Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth. He who gathers crops in summer is a wise son, but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son."
Colossians 3:23-24 "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord and not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving."
Show the "insect" card and review the words to remember. Then ask, "Why is it wise to work hard? In what ways do you work hard?"

Activity
The ladybug, known as an "insect predator," eats harmful insects that destroy plants. Make a ladybug by painting a rock red. When it is dry, paint a black stripe down the middle, black dots on the back, and a black head.
Make an insect badge by drawing an ant on a small white oval of white paper. On the badge print "I am a wise child, so I work hard." Ask the student to tell you what these words mean. Discuss briefly.

Day 4
Activity
Look at the "Bee" article in the World Book Encyclopedia. Then enjoy some honey on a spoon or on a cracker. You may be able to buy a piece of honeycomb at the grocery store. Try making these honey balls for a treat: 2 T. honey, 2 T. peanut butter, 2 T. powdered milk, 2 T. wheat germ. Let the student measure the ingredients, mix them with his hands, and form the mixture into little balls. They may be eaten right away or rolled in sunflower seeds or shredded coconut and placed in the refrigerator to harden.
Tell the story of "The Little Red Hen" who works hard even when the animals around her do not want to work. Only she and her children get to enjoy a delicious meal. Then read and discuss 2 Thessalonians 3:11b: "If a man will not work, he shall not eat."

Day 5
Activity
Go outside and observe insects. How many different kinds can you find? How do they look the same as/different from each other? Use a magnifying glass, if possible. Collect some insects in a glass jar for temporary observation and then release them. You can make an insect trap by digging a small hole outside in which you bury a glass jar so the top is level with the ground. Put a small piece of cake or other sweets in the jar. Keep the jar dark and protected from the weather by propping a small board over it but making sure that insects can still get freely beneath it. Check the jar early the next morning.
Show the picture flashcards and review the words to remember for all lessons taught so far.

Day 6
Book Day
The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle (Harper & Row, Singapore, 1977). A grouchy ladybug learns to be polite.
1. Read the book to the student.
2. Have the student retell the story using the book's illustrations. Then work together to make a list of the animals the grouchy ladybug met. Put them in the same order as she met them. What do you notice about their size?
3. Make a clock from a paper plate, a brass paper fastener, and two cardboard pieces for the hour and minute hands. Explain how to tell time on the hour (o'clock) and examine the clocks in the book.
Alternate Literature Selections: If The Grouchy Ladybug is not available, you may substitute one of these books or a similar storybook about insects.
Inch by Inch by Leo Lionni (Astor-Honor, Inc., New York, 1960). A clever inchworm escapes being eaten by measuring some birds and a nightingale's song.
1. Read the story to the student.
2. Have the student retell the story using the book's illustrations.
3. Help the student use a ruler to measure an assortment of objects.
4. Let the student use clay to make some little inchworms.
5. Use an encyclopedia or nature book to find out more about inchworms.
The Silent Concert by Mary Leister. Insects, frogs, and other forest creatures all try to make one another's noises but without success.
1. Read the story to the student.
2. Discuss the meaning of this story. God has created each animal, and each of us, with unique beauty and abilities. Read Romans 12:4-8 and 1 Corinthians 12:17-20 to yourself and then explain some of these concepts to the student.
3. At nighttime, go outside and listen for the night noises in your neighborhood. Compare them to the noises in this book.

--The Old Schoolhouse Magazine
We are DELIGHTED with the Kindergarten curriculum. Your lessons are so wonderfully laid out for successful homeschooling. My daughter used to say, "I don't want to do school." Now she sits right down, expecting to have fun! And my toddler can easily participate in the science projects. We're enjoying My Father's World immensely
--J.O., Oregon
This is my first year homeschooling and I was afraid I wouldn't be able to do it. My Father's World has been a blessing . . . I am constantly amazed at the organization and completeness of the curriculum. We are thrilled with it all . . . The art and science projects are very well laid out, simple enough for my kids to understand and yet so full of fun and wonder that the kids have learned a LOT about God's creation.
--Michele
Just wanted to let you know how much my son has enjoyed your program. We started it when he was 4, he has since turned five, and he is on lesson 25. He can't wait to do his work each day and he is reading the short stories each week with ease. We tell everyone that has young children about MFW.
Thank you so much for making such a wonderful program.
--Charla Barnett, North Carolina
My Father's World From A to Z can be very helpful, not only to inexperienced homeschool parents, but also to veterans who have children at higher levels as well as little ones.
A solid program like My Father's World can ease the burden of a parent-teacher pulled in several directions and ensure that the kindergarten child in a larger family will not "fall in the cracks" or have any serious gaps in their learning.
--Paula Olson, Texas |
 | Is my child ready for kindergarten? My Father's World Kindergarten is designed for a child that is ready to begin to read. My Father's World usually recommends waiting until a child is five years old before beginning Kindergarten. Some older four year olds are ready for Kindergarten so it's important to carefully discern readiness. - Is he ready to sit down and do 20 - 30 minutes of written work daily?
- Does she have the manual dexterity to begin writing letters and words and is she interested in doing so?
- Is your child already taking time to sit down to draw and color?
- Is he excited about starting school?
If the answer is yes to these questions then your child is probably ready to start Kindergarten. | | How do I teach a preschooler, kindergartner, and 1st grader together? In pre-school, K and 1st grade, the differences in children's abilities are great. We recommend working individually with each child on phonics, hand writing, and math skills. Children in pre-school will benefit from 15 minutes of one-on-one parent time working on pre-writing and math skills. Children in K and 1st grade will need 30-60 minutes of individual parent time to work on reading, writing and math. Specific skills will be addressed in each child's age appropriate curriculum. We recommend My Father's World Kindergarten and First Grade Deluxe packages along with our Preschool package. Please see How to Teach K and 1st Together for more information about using these programs together. School can be completed for all three in children in 2½ - 3½ hours each day. Please see How to Teach K and 1st Together | | How does MFW teach phonics in kindergarten? My Father's World uses a multi-sensory approach to reading that involves children learning to blend both beginning sounds and ending sounds. In My Father's World Kindergarten, sounds are introduced first that are the easiest for children to pronounce as well as the most efficient way to begin reading words. Students learn to read words and sentences and will make 11 small books throughout the year from which to read. The thematic units build on each other and have been designed to be introduced with learning to read in mind.
Reading is taught by having students blend consonants before and after the short vowel sounds helping children to put sounds and words together. My Father's World has intentionally chosen to introduce the blending of sounds and words without rhyming so that kids are not memorizing the words based on a pattern. Blending with a mix of beginning and ending sounds help insure they are learning to read. Our goal by the end of Kindergarten is to have a child easily reading all short vowels in words and sentences. Blending of sounds and reading begins in lesson 6 giving students lots of time to practice reading before moving to My Father's World First Grade.
My Father's First Grade will complete phonics and reading instruction. All phonics needed to become an independent reader will be learned during this year.
| | What is the length of MFW Kindergarten? The K program begins with a 10 day overview of creation followed by 26 lessons taking 6 days each, not six days per week. This is a total of 166 days or approx 33 weeks which is considered a full school year. Each daily lesson plan will take 60-90 minutes to complete. | | How can I use My Father's World Kindergarten with my reading child? Children that are reading when entering Kindergarten can still benefit greatly from My Father's World Kindergarten. They will spend the year learning about the Creation story from Genesis followed by 26 hands-on, thematic units that will focus on the wonders in God's creation. The sun, moon, rocks, vegetables, elephants, butterflies and dinosaurs are just a few topics they will discover. Handwriting will be learned throughout the program this year. They will also learn math skills including counting, writing numerals, preparing and understanding charts and graphs, clocks, money and an introduction to addition and subtraction. To further challenge an advanced reader:
- Use the reading time as a handwriting and beginning composition program which will focus on simple spelling and some mechanics of writing through copy work and dictation.
- Beginning with lesson 6, use the word list, choose 3-5 words as a spelling list. Dictate these words to your child as they write the works on K-lined paper. Immediately correct those that are wrong and have your child copy them again.
- If your child can read a specific sentence, use that sentence as copy work having your child use their very best handwriting.
- If copy work is too easy, you may dictate the sentence to your child after looking over the sentence with him or her. If this is too difficult be sure and stop, waiting until a later grade to begin dictation.
- Add readers at your child's reading level to continue you child's progress. Honey for a Child's Heart is a great resource for grade level books and is available through My Father's World.
- Continue to use the math, Bible, science, literature and character development and reading books about the lesson theme scheduled in the Teacher's Manual.
| | How long will it take to receive the ants and butterflies after sending in the certificate? The delivery time is 2-3 weeks for the ant and butterfly orders depending on weather. The ants are used in lesson 11 and the butterflies are studied in lesson 21 in the K curriculum. | | What are the benefits of the Deluxe Package? We recommend purchasing the deluxe package to provide the broadest and most complete education for your children. All of the items in the deluxe packages are scheduled or explained in the Teacher's Manuals. Deluxe packages include read alouds, music, art, as well as items to enrich the year's study. The basic package was created as a consideration for customers who were unable to purchase all the items in the deluxe package. The basic package will give your child a good, solid education. You may choose to purchase individual items from the deluxe package. |
