1850 to Modern Times is the final year of a chronological history-based study for students in grades 2-8. Enjoy learning U.S. and world history as you solve cryptography puzzles, bake Vietnamese Apricot Coconut Cake, recite the Gettysburg Address, and sing catchy states and capitals songs. Read about Hudson Taylor, a pioneer missionary to China; and Sergeant York, a humble mountain man and Christian, who became a great World War I hero.
1850 to Modern Times is a complete curriculum for history, Bible, and science. You will only need to add language arts and math. Also consider adding foreign language and supplements from the Deluxe Package. 2nd and 3rd graders will also need the 2nd-3rd Grade Supplement for 1850 to Modern Times.
1850 to Modern Times uses The Story of the World, Volume 4, as well as the corresponding Activity Book. Because the content this year is more difficult, the activity book’s review questions are needed to reinforce learning. It also contains assignments for outlines or summaries for each chapter to help develop writing skills and provides maps and activities.
Bible
• Learn about basic Christian beliefs with stories from around the world that illustrate key Bible passages, using A Young Person’s Guide to Knowing God by beloved author Patricia St. John.
• Be inspired by the stories of faithful Christians from In God We Trust, Trial and Triumph, and Tales of Persia.
• Sing the great hymns of our faith and learn their stories (coordinated with this year’s history study) using Then Sings My Soul (available separately).
History
• Study world and U.S. history from 1850 to modern times with a number of informative books and a detailed timeline book (all fully scheduled in the Teacher’s Manual).
• Integrate history with composition and handwriting as you make a history notebook. Enjoy cooking delicious recipes from the past.
• Learn about U.S. presidents and U.S geography with a brief trip through all 50 states (completing a two-year study that began in Exploration to 1850).
Science
• Study chemistry and physics with many hands-on experiments. The Deluxe Package includes the Wired! electricity kit and a magnet kit.
• For 7th and 8th graders, enrich topics with library books or add Apologia science.
Art and Music
• Enjoy hands-on projects related to history, science, and Bible.
• Focus on U.S. patriotic songs and composers such as Foster, Sousa, Armstrong, and Gershwin.
• Continue to develop a variety of art skills with optional lessons from God and the History of Art (available separately).
Read Aloud
• A number of excellent books are included: Courage to Run, Across Five Aprils, Hudson Taylor, Sergeant York and the Great War, Corrie ten Boom, and Brother Andrew.
Math, Language Arts, and Foreign Language
• Add math and language arts. (Click links to see our recommended programs.)
• Foreign language is optional, but highly recommended.
| Note for 2nd and 3rd Grade: The content of 1850 to Modern Times is difficult for 2nd and 3rd graders. The information is more difficult to understand than in our other history programs; many of the books are written at a higher comprehension level. The history content is often troubling—describing wars and human cruelty—and not suitable for younger students. The author of The Story of the World does not recommend using Volume 4 with 3rd grade or younger, and we agree. However, 2nd and 3rd graders can still join you for Bible, science experiments, science readings (the easier sections), and studying presidents and states. (Remember that 2nd and 3rd graders will have an opportunity to repeat 1850 to Modern Times in 7th or 8th grade, when they will have the maturity needed to fully comprehend the complex information.)
To add history content for 2nd and 3rd graders, you will need the 2nd-3rd Grade Supplement for 1850 to Modern Times. Fascinating literature books as well as two activity books help make history and U.S. geography come alive for younger students. You will find all of these books conveniently scheduled in your lesson plans. They are great books, and you won’t want to miss any of them!

| Each Student will need a set of Student Sheets. One set of Student Sheets for 4th - 8th Grade is included in the Basic Package. One set of Student Sheets for 2nd-3rd Grade is included in the 2nd-3rd Grade Supplement. If families have additional students in these grades, they may photocopy the sheets or purchase additional sets of the appropriate sheets. (Purchasing additional sets is a more convenient option; the set for older grades is very large, and both sets have some colored and card stock sheets.)
